中国(zhōng guó) “the middle country, i.e. Central North India” (a translation of Skt. madhyadeśa “the midland country, lying between the Himālayas in the north, the Vindhya mountains in the south, Vinaśana in the west, Prayāga in the east, and comprising of the present-day cities of Allahabad, Agra, Delhi, Oude etc.” [cf.
